The Gibb River Road – Windjana Gorge

YES! We're on the Gibb!!!

YES! We’re on the Gibb!!!

Starting in Derby we shopped and stocked up. We’re unsure how long we will be on the Gibb having to still phone a station back to confirm if they’d like us to WWOOF. As there is no mobile coverage we need to phone them at the first pay phone. We have stocked up for two weeks of food plus some extras. These shopping days are always a little chaotic and finding a place to put the shopping when the car is already full and the pantry hard to access in the trailer means we travel with shopping around our feet. Not that it all even fits in the pantry! Once the trailer is open we have places to store our extra stores. Every shopping day Stephen thinks of ways we could have a box attached to the draw bar to hold it all.

Windjana Gorge was our first stop. Driving there in the late afternoon with the sun setting gave a beautiful light and the many boabs adding to the excitement of finally being on the Gibb, an iconic trip across the Kimberley’s that we’ve had on our agenda for many many years. It was another one of those “pinch yourself” moments … it’s really happening!

Windjana was beautiful in the late afternoon light and the water was full of small fresh water crocodiles to the delight of the boys especially. There were some quite small ones which were rather cute.

Lily, Dan and Stephen also did the Tunnel Creek walk – yes the rest of us are scaredy cats :-). They enter the tunnel with water, bats and a few small freshies armed with a torch as it becomes pitch black. They did well and enjoyed the walk. This is a stunning area with the ranges and boabs making it a photographers paradise.

The facilities here are surprisingly good with flush toilets and hot (usually) showers. Our days are still rather warm but thankfully the nights are cooler, still not requiring a jacket but at least cool enough for a peaceful night sleep.

Lorna

O my O my! Would expect no less than the outstanding shots of this wild & beautiful part of Oz. The more you show us, the more we realise how little we’ve seen. Simply stunning!
Keep them coming, Chris. We are flat out here at present & it does the soul good to sit for a while, drink in the pics & remember just what’s out there in this wide brown land…
Blessings
L xx
