Great Ocean Road

14 03 2013

What a dash we did off the Spirit of Tasmania through Victoria.  Being late risers and a little slow on the pack up it was novel for us to be on the road at about 6:45am!  We turned left and headed for the Great Ocean Road area since the Twelve Apostles has been on my hit list to photograph for maybe 20 years!

After a nut bar in the car, a quick stop to see Bells Beach we stopped at Split Rock for our usual breakfast of yoghurt, chia and fruit.  We then travelled on to Apollo Bay, stopped at information and made the choice of Airey’s River for a free camp spot.  The drive there was beautiful following the amazing coastline of beaches, cliff faces and rain forest.

Airey’s River was a great spot, large open grass areas, fire places, brand new pit toilet block and the best part …. KOALAS!  It was such a thrill to wonder around and spot the koalas everyday to see if they’d swapped trees, were curled up asleep or awake munching on a leaf or even hanging on a little tighter due to the wind.

We started this place very quietly and as the days increased it became quite a social hub.  We spend a lovely afternoon with another family traveling Australia also, but the other direction to us, talked to guys from England who were only convinced there were no crocodiles in the river due to our close proximity to it :-), a French group who pulled up and started our fire in our absence to have our youngest return and stand in front, hand on hips – “You have taken OUR fire – I will pour water over your heads”.  Oh my embarrassment!  I was saved due to their poor english.  Our last night was a group from Holland and Denmark.  It was fun showing some of them their first ever koala.

The Twelve Apostles was lovely.  We went for sunset – although I still think sunrise might have been better, but the 1 1/2 hour drive from camp was going to be a little too early for us McPherson’s!

We didn’t do this area justice, but our goal is to get to the West Coast of Australia ASAP.  As our home base is NSW we feel we can do this area again … another time.

Once again WOW WOW WOW!!!
“How great is our God, sing with me how great is our God…” Absolutely stunning – and good to follow from afar the continuing story of your Amazing Aussie Odyssey.
God bless, protect & provide for you on the next stage. Our son Keiran is in Mandurah WA, along with our good friends Geoff & Ruth Walker who run the “Houses of Healing” ministry if you should happen down that way…
Love

I would have preferred to email you privately but don’t have your email address. Can you give me a rough estimate offline on how your costs for food , diesel , and camping have been like . We plan to do it much in the same that you guys are only in a bus. Looking forward to your reply …and your nxt blog.
