Our Australia Day

26 01 2013

We are currently camped on Bruny Island, Tasmania at a campsite called Cloudy Bay, accessed only by the beach.  It isn’t quite as off the beaten track as we thought as there is a komby van or two, commodore and even a little kia that all managed the beach with ease.

This morning we headed for the penguin rookery site to meet Ranger Tiff to discuss the wildlife on Bruny.  It appeared we were her only customers for the morning, so we got a great one on six talk and answers to all our questions.  Once the rain started we helped her pack up her displays and dashed for the cars.  Adventure Bay had its market day and in usual Tasmanian fashion the rain stopped as quick as it started and we browsed their displays.

Back at camp Daniel wanted to make a damper, we were already thinking of bacon and eggs for lunch so vamped up the  damper by adding some bacon a little cheese and grated zucchini – wow … it was DELICIOUS!  Well done Dan!

Ranger Tiff was scheduled for a rock pool explore back near Adventure Bay at Coal Point at 3pm.  We promised to meet up again if it wasn’t raining.  The afternoon was lovely so off we went again … with a little stop off at the Bruny Chocolate shop for some delicious Bruny Island fudge.  The rock pool scramblings and talk was very interesting and captured all our attention.  Again, we were the only participants, which was awesome for us to have our private “tour”.

Dinner was a simple affair, along with a small campfire, shower and bed.  This was a quiet Australia Day for us, but very enjoyable and educational.

For those interested our damper recipe was:

3 1/2 cups of gluten free flour
6 tsp baking powder
3/4 tsp salt
3 table spoons butter
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup water
roughly 1/2 cup chopped bacon
1/2 cup of small chunks of cheese
1/2 zucchini grated

Mix it all – add more flour or water to get dough consistency and cook for about 20 minutes in the camp oven.

I want to reach that yellow sea star! (BTW they are not star fish as we've always said as they aren't a fish!)

“I want to get that yellow sea star!” (BTW: they aren’t called star fish
as we have always done, they aren’t fish!)
